“Find your niche” they said. “Choose a specific topic to write about” they said. There are actually a lot of things I want to write about. How do I just choose one? Well, I believe I can at least pick a primary focus. That primary focus would be “being better”. I’ve been on a journey for the last few years to try to improve all the things that suck about my life. As with most people, this started when I realized there were a lot of things that I was not happy with that could almost certainly be improved by my actions. I have had some success and I have had some failures. I’ve started habits that I’ve maintained up to this day and I’ve also given up on positive habits way too early. If you are looking for one of these CEO types who has perfectly optimized every aspect of their life and maintains superhero-like discipline, you won’t find it with me. Maybe that is a good thing. I’m probably a lot more like you. If you are like most people, you probably have some room for improvement when it comes to managing your finances. You may struggle with health and fitness. It is quite possible, that you find yourself overwhelmed with all the things you have to do. Or, you may be the person who has no motivation and just plays videos games instead of doing what you know you should be doing. I’ve been in all these places, so I’m not judging.
I have a lot of room for improvement. I try to improve a little every week. So, while I expect to be sharing tips and tricks from my own experience, I’ll also be sharing my journey. I’ll be giving you some tips that I have only just started utilizing myself. So, hopefully, as I continue to write in this blog, you will see a progression. You’ll get to see me grow. That is the goal anyway.
Since I’m also a technology enthusiast and “IT guy”, I’ll also write about technology. Sorry, I can’t help it. Most of what I write that is technology related will likely be about the things I use that help me in my day to day life. Of course, I’ll probably also give my thoughts on upcoming technology and ‘happenings’ in the tech industry.
What I likely won’t write about is hot button social issues or politics. Why? Primarily because this stuff tends to stress me out. Politics is often just people of differing opinions slinging mud at each other. People usually aren’t interested in other people’s points of view. So, political talk either re-enforces positions you already have or makes you angry and makes you want to lash out. Everyone wants to “out rhetoric” the other. We come up with these “emotionally powerful” statements and memes that cast our position in an unrealistically positive light and frame opposing positions as harmful and unloving. If you’d take the time to listen to people who think differently than you, you may be surprised to discover that they aren’t as cold-hearted and evil as your originally thought. In fact, you might even find that you can have an engaging and education conversation. You can learn a lot from people who aren’t like you. Imagine if the people in our government could learn to do this. Imagine if President Trump could actually hold a conversation with Nancy Pelosi (and vice verse, obviously). Imagine if they could just talk. But, they don’t talk. They shout. Because , obviously, the other person is wrong. Hot button social issues are the same. It’s hard to talk to people about extremely emotional subjects. Logical and empirical data will always take a back seat to ‘clever’ rhetoric and memes.
So, there you have it. I look forward to posting at least twice a week. Of course, I have a full-time job and three kids so… we shall see.
